Student health insurance requirements for nonimmigrant students

Healthcare in the United States is complex and can be very expensive. All international students (F-1 and J-1 students) are required to enroll in the BGSU student health insurance plan, unless they have an alternative insurance plan that meets BGSU minimum essential coverage requirements. International students, scholars and family members are expected to be fully responsible for health insurance and healthcare costs.

The nonimmigrant documents issued by the University for entry into the United States specifically state that there is a health insurance cost. F-1 students may check their I-20 for this estimate under the heading “Financials” and subheading of “Books and Insurance and Fees.”  J-1 status students must show proof of insurance as part of their application and acknowledge the insurance requirement on their DS-2019.

Email the Student Health Insurance Office with questions.
